Last night I went to watch the movie that probably many people would watch during the summer, Superman Returns. I will just skip the details and go straight to the commenting. You may get the plot from many movie websites.

I think the movie is quite good, but when one looks carefully, there are many details that the movie makers should have thought about. Some elements just don't match the scene. First of all, when was the story happening? In the future or now? Or past?

Chronologically lost
You would see old buildings, old-styled clothes, and old farmlands. However, then you will see very modern cell phones, and even an Audi. What's going on? I have difficulties to find out exactly where I am on the timeline. They got different elements from different periods of our history (or future) into the film, and you have no idea if this is 1980 or 2050. Old styled building of the newspaper company with an Audi in the street, which was filled with old yellow cabs. Arha...

Too advanced?
There is some physics that is kinda misleading too. The free-of-gravity shot when the aeroplane was brought to space is rather strange because this kind of phenomenon should go gradually. You won't have a moment when you suddenly lose gravity, and suddenly gain it back. Also, if a plane is so out of the atmosphere, the plane will probably explode due to pressure. Or it loses pressure since the plane was actually damaged. Okay, if the material was that strong, why was the city, again, like an old one?

Anyway, one shouldn't go that deep like I do ...you know, it is important to enjoy the movie. I did enjoy it, but I just got some questions behind my mind too. Overall it is a pretty nice movie. You don't need to care too much about how much it make sense. You know, a Superman doesn't make sense already.

And last thing, I like the crystal land.

Rember that this is a comic book world. They are set apart from normal human lifestyles. Much like all the batman movies, where they have the crazy old school styles and buildings but it is a modern world tech.
there is also Napoleon Dynamite, with 80's styles in the modern world.

I haven't seen the film but I like it when old and new are mixed. I like 20s and 30s architecture and fashion and cars so they would be cool with modern technology.

You mentioned that you liked the crystal world. I actually did work experience with a guy (who authors dvds) who was working with the london company which did all the CGI for those scenes. It is called Framestore CFC http://www.framestore-cfc.com/feature/superman_returns/index.html . I went to their offices but was in the TV encoding and post production building rather than the VFX area.
