There are many great inventions in this world, but some are just strange enough that people won't like. My company uese Websense to filter websites, and so when you are viewing some websites blacklisted or containing banned materials, it will stop loading the website and say that website is filtered out.

I see how it is invented, but it is not a good filter I have to say. How come when we are searching for something like building materials, it would filter a website and say it contains adult materials? How come it will filter a music website because there may contain MP3s? It really doesn't work in some way.

Maybe it is needed to prevent the employees from viewing certain materials, but I guess except porn and pirated stuff, the web is basically okay for viewing don't you think?After all, I believe that whether your team goes bad or not has nothing to do with the website contents, but with the mentality that your employees have when viewing the sites.

Thank God Angelworld hasn't been blacklisted yet.

I guess aside from preventing the employees to view illegal or unethical stuff, the managers and others just don't want you all to spend or 'waste' your working time on these websites..that's why they would wanna install these filters...

However for the errors of the filter...maybe those who chose websense don't know that much about PCs and they just picked it for no reason...or maybe they simply wanna overdo the blocking task to let you guys concentrate on work? -_- the building material thing was..weird though...oh well

The way i have always seen it, is... there is no sense in websense.
Both companys that i have worked for... neither of them use any filters at all. One is a television station, the other is a Publisher.

The fact is, there are ways around websense. The employees will still waste time, with or without internet. Websense causes distrust between Management and employees. Most of all, it is more of a hassle than it is good.
Often when searching for things that is required for work. Such as images of hotels, so you can get an outside idea of what is currently popular in hotels. Or maybe find a GPL font, or research churches. Many good searches would be blocked, and become more of a waste of time than anything else... because you are forced to look elsewhere.
