I always think that graphics is a part of architecture, and it is never something just for presentation. Architecture IS graphics in some way, and there is no doubt that architects should have good graphic sense, if not having good graphic skills.

It is alarming, though, that many of the young graduates from the architectural schools have a rather weak sense in graphics. I am not saying that I am very good at graphics and so I can compare people to people, but it is like a prevailing phenomenon that when many architects are working on projects which are based on money, they are losing the design skills and eventually losing the graphics skill. Some may think that losing graphics skills is not a good deal because they just don't know how to do presentation panels. That's not true.

With no surprise, we know that when architects design, we draw. We think from a graphical way instead of really just calculating anything. We do have rational thinking behind, but after all it is the aesthetics that governs a design and make it architectural instead of just making a building. We cannot simply depend on words or numbers simply because that is not the way.

Design cannot be pushed.

Too bad in many firms here, we are bounded by time and money. We get a job after winning a tender, and then we try to figure out a design within a very limited of time. Of course, we build it within a very short time too. Everything is done extremely fast, and apparently architects cannot always do what they like. Design cannot be pushed. You have to research, be inspired, think and work out options. Gradually, many architects including my classmates work with technical things every day like calculating how to fit more space within structures, picking proprieties within budgets and finding ways to finish the construction within limited time.

One may say it is another kind of design process, and I agree. The main point here is that we are losing the basic skills of design. We THINK, and that's what makes us different. We don't think randomly, but we think in a special way like we are taught in school. I wonder, if we are doing those kinds of work I mentioned above, how different are we from a surveyor or engineer? Or just a interior-designer?

They are losing the design skills and eventually losing the graphics skill.

But why graphics? What is that to do with graphics? Good question. Graphics is what and how we architects THINK. It presents the ideas in our mind in solid form, acting like an intermediate step between thoughts and reality. I can't imagine the time when we don't draw on tracing paper anymore, since it is to show others what is on your mind. It is also the best way to represent aesthetics, because the drawing IS aesthetics.

I want to give a piece of advice to my colleagues and friends who are architects-to-be: draw, please. Be graphical, because that's what an architect does.

Today I went out to lunch with one of my past older schoolmates, and she was to register as an architect. However, her real interest lies in painting actually, and she wants to be a painter. She said, that was really her career, not being an architect.

She should have shown her paintings to others but she actually kept all the works to herself. She didn't really want to publicize what she did, and she mentioned something about publishing.

The reason why she was not to publish her paintings, either posting them up or photographing them and showing to others, is that comments from the public would lead to many undesirable effects. Art is something personal, and may not be subject to different comments from the audience. She told me that someone once said that publication was the death of an artist.

Comments should help an artist, assuming that they are from people who can practise self-discipline.

Being talked about isn't something nice at all sometimes. I have far too much experience in this. You know, I do digital art and posting my pieces up is just too easy. Sites like deviantART encourage people to submit and receive comments. They started from a good intention and the functions should help the artists in a good way, but it is all assumed that the people who comment can practise self-discipline.

Unfortunately, many of the people in our world aren't that considerate. Togther with the fast speed over the Internet, things are fast food and you can't expect the others to think too much before saying anything. Quickly, bad comments start to spawn all over the place, no matter they are from good intention or jealousy. One thing is certain: if you don't like it, you should shut up. Ironically, I guess only 10% of the world know this and really shut up when they come across something they are not into.

Publication is the death of many artists.

When an artist faces these comments, especially the ones that accuse him or her for something that he or she didn't intend, one can imagine a hot discussion would commence in an uncontrollable way (for most of the time). In the end, an artist will be easily stray away in order to fit into the general taste, unconsciously or consciously.

My friend said, if you were so confident with your work, and if you were so sure about what you were doing, you didn't really need any comments. Yes, that is when you were a good artist already or even a maestro. In a way I have to agree. I don't think I am a master, but I guess I don't need any more comments or suggestions from people especially those from deviantART who are mostly abusing their "freedom of speech". I only need wise words from masters that I admire, I guess. At least, Shakespeare probably didn't need comments from others every time he made a masterpiece.

By the way, I just can't believe France lost. Sigh...

Even it is the third day, things are pretty the same. Btw, it is 14th already and the third day was on 7th May. I am just writing back so don't treat today as the real third day of the show.

Since not much of the show can be talked anymore (because they are already talked about in the previous two journals), I will talk about what I did in the Publication Team.

Basically, I led a team of several people. We were in charge of designing everything that was sent to invite people and that was required for any propaganda. Therefore, we did the designs for the invitation card, poster, banner and the graduation book. And you are right, what my team did was nearly 60% of the whole committee needed to do.

Being a team leader isn't easy. First, we all met up and discussed about this year's theme. We got several cool ideas, and finally my theme was chosen. It was Blossom, meaning the period of flowering. It is like a time of unleashing something, revealing the beauty of something. This is exactly what graduation should be: to unravel our imagination and make architecture known to the others.

The presentation of Blossom was to link flowers with what we did in school. We always use tracing paper to design, and sketches and drawings are the things that people use to relate to architects. Therefore, we took the idea of this and created some tracing-paper-flower. I got an idea that some flowers were coming out from one end of the tracing paper, symbolizing the ideas becoming real.

But the first thing is to design the invitation card. Since the card isn't very big, just enough to fit into the envelope (standard) and so I suggested to shoot only one flower for the card. I didn't use computer renderings because it wasn't natural and it might take even more time than photographing the real object. So after several days of setting up things, we got this for the card:

These are just two of the shots which look okay. After some Photoshop work, the card came out like this:

The poster is of course harder because the flower shot is the biggest and we spent most of the time to get the best image. This is final product, taken during the opening ceremony:

The first shot (to test-run the idea) is like this:

And we have two final versions of the poster:

We finally decided to go with the second one, which is cleaner without the bottom flower pattern. The logo design was basically my work, though it was discussed among the teammates to be finalized. I love how the fonts were played with in different weights and thickness.

We also designed the introductory panel at the venue entrance, and also the location map of students' works. First I will show you a rendering done by me before the exhibition to visualize what the setup would be like.

The panel and the map

The final thing is the book design, which is the most tedious. Since this year the show started way too early, we had to do the book in a very short time. The reason why I said it was tedious work to design this book because when we started to work on the book, my teammates were tellng me they were busy, leaving me alone to do this. I will explain more about this in another journal. Anyway, the book turned out to be nice and well-designed. The print quality was very good

I feel proud of the overall theme, clean and strong. I received compliments from the department Chairman and he said he wanted to keep me one more year to deal with the grad-show next year, jokingly. I of course refused because I didn't want another year like detention! Anyway, while I designed most of the things, without my teammates (Hei and Rock) I couldn't really make things work this well. I hope you enjoy too

Okay, today I will show you some images around the exhibition. I won't, however, show all the works because some are really...arr...you know and so you will see the interesting ones here first, this is a panoramic view of the empty venue, taken the time before the setup...

And as you have seen my panel already, I will show you the real file...a resized version...

And behind my panel is my colleague Candy's panel. She was doing a cooking school with restaurant...simple design but interesting spaces inside... (the left one)

Then this is the group model of four students, who did their project in China (site selection because of the teacher). This model shows four models inside, but don't be amazed by the four-tower scheme because I really don't think it's his design. It is plagairism. This is a scheme our Master Steven Holl did some time ago and this student really copied it out. I have no idea why he still passed the exam but I am sure some actions would be done later by the department head because he already knew about this during the gradshow.

This is (on the right) Rock's scheme. His scheme just won a scholarship about housing design. It was quite interesting, as he introduced paths and circulations into a residential tower, creating a lively space to live in instead of prison boxes.

The teacher-in-charge of our graduation Tim Nutt was explaining my scheme to an architect Chung, special guest of our show.

Then, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Kenneth Young came to our show as a special guest. Our class rep Gabriel (middle) and our Deparment Head (right) were talking about Gabriel's project together.

Okay, another shot of my project. Donald was next to me but I have no idea what his project was. He was just playing with wooden bars and built some things with glue. Don't tell me that's architecture because no one wants to live in glue-and-wood buildings. I don't want to be harsh but his project is something a 5-year-old can do.

This is a scheme by Ken. He was doing customized housing, and so you can pick your desired rooms and furnitures and settings for your dream house. He presented the project in a drawer, which is quite funny.

Then this is a project by my good friend Johnson. He is doing urban planning, where he inserted this cylinder of interesting facade as the cinema-plex.

Then this is our class rep Gabriel's work. He was doing this giant residential tower. He got high grade with this, because his research was just damn thorough and huge.

Okay, that's for today. Tmr I will show you the gradshow design by me (the invitation cards and books)

Okay, finally I got the time to post up some photos (actually I don't really have much time since the show is still up today and I am going back soon to prepare for the packing when it ends tonight). Here are some shots during the set up two days ago. The venue is the Rotunda, Exchange Square, Central. (in Hong Kong of course). The exhibition lasts for 4 days, 5th-8th May.

Just for your information, my camera is a newly bought Canon IXUS 800 IS. Wow, the ISO 800 function is really useful as you can see the shots, taken at 2100-0000, are still quite clear and sharp with accurate colors.

This is the place where the exhibition happens. It is round (cos it is the Rotunda) and has four trees (they are expensive, according to the host). I think it's quite nice at night time when the spotlight shines on the trees...

Outside the Rotunda there is a balcony (which sounds more like a place for smokers )

Then the contractor came and started to set up the boards.

After 2 hours, most of the boards were done and many of the students had already pinned up. The models were now back to the students since they were all packed together and transfered by trucks.

This is the main panel at the entrance, designed by me.

Still defects can be found on the site. Some shots were taken just to clarify that the defects weren't our fault at all (the venue was clear as you can see)

My panel is right at the entrance. You see on the right it was the location map (my design again ), and when you enter the exhibition, you will see my panel right there (right at the middle of the image). Then, it is a closer look of the panel, taken after I just pinned up my things and set the models...

As always, after the setup, rubbish were left and everyone would try not to touch that. Thank God I was on duty the next morning and so I could go home early to rest

Okay, that's for the first day. Let me post more tomorrow after fixing some photos. I also have panoramas!

Finally my review is done, and it was fun to finish all the work and present it to people who got no idea about what you did before. Anyway, this year is my last year, and thesis things always got the most attention. This is a quick walkthrough of my presentation have a look!

So it is the review day, and we have all the things set up in the exhibition area.

There are four halls, for four different studios. Mine is Habitation and it is in the first hall. My project is right at the door. You will see it right when you pass by. I chose this vantage position!

So the first thing is the panel as you can see there. From left to right the panels tell people the thesis statement, concepts, realizations and design with CADs (plan and sectional drawings...) Of course you have models, and here they are:

These are the site model showing how the design reacts with the site. Then it is the concept models:

Then this is the 1:200 model showing the design of the building and the spaces in the building. It has red human figures!

This is the entrance of the building....

And there is graffiti wall outside this museum...oh yeah, I am designing a visual art galleria! ANd it has public art space like this wall too

Now this is the biggest gallery in the building...

Now this is a study model showing how the exhibits are placed...

And then I have the thesis report for this project. It is a must for us senior classmates:

I also have a sectional model showing the details in the structure:

Finally, show you a rendeirng in my panel. I will show you a JPG file of this rendering later, but here is what is printed out:

How's it?

These nights I couldn't sleep well. I got nightmares and woke up early in the morning like 4-5am. It was horrible.

I guess it was about the pressure of the exam, but no, it is actually the panels. I have them ready on last Saturday, but I had to wait for my colleague to finish his so that we could send the files to a printshop in China to print together.

The feeling of waiting isn't good. You know, you are ready, and you of course want them to be printed out asap and finish one item on the to-do list.

Another thing that worries me is that company. It is a printshop I have never tried before. I just knew it from my teachers, who printed things there for some tenders and competition submissions. I guess, then, the quality can't be too bad, and after all it costs only 1/6 of the price you need in Hong Kong. If there is anything wrong you can always print them again in another place. The problem is that it is in Shenzhen, China (right north of the border of Hong Kong) and I have never gone there for some time. I have no idea how to get the panels.

Finally it was all done. It took me some time to call several times in order to make them understand what we needed. I realized my Putonghua wasn't really good (I have the tendency to speak in English after a line of Putonghua) and I guess I need some more Mandarin practice. Last night around 1930 me and my friend went across the border and got the panels. It was hard work to carry them back to school. One A0 panel on foam board seems light (it IS light), but 16 of this isn't the same.

I was so relieved when I got them. The quality is unbelievably exceptionally stunning. My panels are filled with different colors, since my project is about visual art. If the colors can't show properly on my panels, I will be done and all ruined. Now I am so happy about the output and I feel so relaxed. I test-printed in a shop close to my university, and the output was aweful. The colors were changed to some strange colors, and the test panel (it has my art Watercolors on it) was like purple. It is just disgusting to see a piece of art was printed out like that, and that man from the shop blamed it on the printer as it used CMYK not RGB. What the hell, shouldn't they handle that?

Anyway it is all done. I am putting all my effort on my models now and hopefully I can finish all of them before Friday afternoon. My final is on Saturday 22nd, and wish me good luck.

These days the weather is very hot. It is nearly 30`C already, It is just mid-spring and it is already showing signs of arr!

Only 2.5 weeks to go and I will have my final review (22nd) and I am working so hard on many things. Renderings, CADs, models and reports. We have to hand in all these things on that day. Now I have finished 1 of the 3 models, 1 of the 4 renderings, 75% of the CAD and 30% of the report.

I am already ahead of most classmates, but I don't care. If I am already faster, I will keep this distance till the end, if not making even more distance.

Finally my these years have only 1 1/2 months to go, but it is all good. It feels a bit different to be at the end of the project. Things have changed, and design is set. Now my foucs is no longer designing but to make things work.

My days are hectic as usual, but now even when I have already passed the design stage, things still don't allow much free time for me. I have some helpers of the lower classes and I have to take advantage of their free time before their final due-days come. Therefore, I already built the model bases for the models to put on, and they are to help with some blocks (ie, buildings around my design).

Completing the overall form and design doesn't mean you can stop. Now I have to design some interior and inner spaces under the overall structure. Even though it is a museum, there are some tiny elements I have to take care for, from staircase to signage. I also have to do a scanerio for one of the exhbition halls, showing how things can be placed and exhibited. If the exhibition design can incorporate with the building design, the whole project will be more convincing. Thus, I have already compiled a list of artworks with their dimensions to demostrate how my space can accommodate them.

Now I am figuring the materlals which will determine how the building looks. You see an architect has just too much to do, not to say I am the only person in this building project team. It is just overwhelming.

Since the project already reaches this stage of finalization, I am going to build 3D models and make some renderings. I don't expect some breathtaking ones, but hopefully I can produce some nice and realistic images. I guess it is not very hard with the CADs I have already done, but as my building is organic with twisting walls and curving roofs, I am not very sure if I can make a decent 3D model, let alone an accurate one.

Wish me good luck. Final on 22th April.

Right after the Chinese New Year, things were going better though it also means busier. This year the new year holiday was short since the public holidays lay on the weekend, and school started right after that. In other words, it is so like the normal school days!

The first good news for me is that my Paypal account is finally unlocked. I failed to pass some security checking because I mistyped the account number, and they locked my account. For three months, they didn't really reply to my help emails and finally I called them. After some really long waiting, a guy on the phone told me to fax some documents and finally the account was back to me. You know there is money inside and I can finally get it back! Thank God!

Some of my clients' jobs are done too, and it is so happy to see the sites are being up and running. But now I am going to reject some offers because I want to focus more on my school's thesis project. I want more but I want to graduate with a good grade too! I can make money later but I can't fail my project! So now it is all about school.

As said, school started quickly, but I didn't say I was unhappy. Quite the opposite, I am quite happy especially when I see some progress in my project. To those who are not familiar, my project is about building a Visual Art Center, and the building form will be like a bunch of ribbons twisting and turning. As you can imagine, the design is so organic and dynamic, and it is hard to design it on paper. I can only do computer models and real models to help with the progress.

Things are going really well when I completed some testing models yesterday. It helped so much to visual the building form for me, and now I can deal with the inner space with a solid model. I will post up some pictures later when I have the time.

Another thing exciting recently is the implantation of the new AJAX scripts in this forum. I am happy about this and I must thank Josh for the motivation and incentive LOL. My script actually bases on his homework and after one day of working things out, I finally created the instant reply function, seeing new posts posted up there on the page. It is so awesome!

Now I am about to put the new scripts in the main site and it will be the first AJAXed art web-portfolio!
